Treatment

Reason

  • Patient should attempt to have a dental check up and clean and scale prior to becoming pregnant

This will enable the dentist to pick up any problems early, and possibly take radiographs without the patient having any concerns.

The cleaning will enable the dentist to start to get the periodontal condition into a healthy state.  Also help to control gingivitis and other plaque retentive factors.

  • If the patient is already pregnant they should have a dental check up and clean as soon as possible. If close to the end of the first trimester a set of normal bitewings can be taken to allow the dentist maximum diagnostic ability.

  • Any dental treatment for fillings etc. should be carried out in the second trimester.  If the treatment is elective in nature it should be carried out at least 6 weeks post partum.

This is the safest time for the Dentist to carry out procedures and also the most comfortable for the mother to be.
